SDMX Evolves into SDMx — The standard for Statistical Data and Metadata

Repositioning a global ISO standard

For Immediate Release

Over the past three decades, SDMX—originally known as Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange—has become a trusted global standard for official statistics. The value of SDMX has grown far beyond its origins in data exchange. It now encompasses all stages of the data lifecycle, including data architecture, interoperability, quality management, dissemination, and enterprise data governance. Adopted by central banks, national statistical offices, international organisations, and financial regulators worldwide, SDMX has become a critical component of the world’s data infrastructure.

Today, the SDMX Sponsors announce a significant evolution in the name and positioning of the standard. SDMX will now be known as SDMx — the standard for Statistical Data and Metadata. “SDMx reflects what our community has already achieved—a shift from data exchange to data leadership.”

In today’s environment, data are a strategic enterprise asset. The new name, the standard for Statistical Data and Metadata, reflects what the global community already knows in practice: that SDMx is a cornerstone in data-driven operations and the delivery of trusted official statistics. The lowercase “x” symbolises how SDMx can operate across systems, sectors, technologies, and borders—connecting meaning, structure, and trust wherever data resides.

For executive leadership, this evolution signals more than a rebrand. It affirms SDMx as a future-ready standard designed for modern data strategies, artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, and global data spaces. SDMx provides organisations with a proven, trusted, and internationally governed framework for managing data as a strategic asset.
