Public Review Announcement for the new SDMX Glossary

A dedicated task-force made up of members from the SDMX Technical (TWG) and Statistical (SWG) Working Groups, and metadata experts submits the new SDMX Glossary for public review.  The review period extends until 30th November 2015 in order to allow time for consolidation of a final version at the end of 2015.  Feedback is welcome. In March 2015 the SDMX Secretariat asked the SDMX SWG to form a task-force to create a SDMX Glossary.  The inputs to the work were:
  • the 2009 Metadata Common Vocabulary (MCV);
  • an existing glossary of SDMX technical terms provided by the SDMX TWG;
  • a 2009 mapping of IMF, Eurostat, OECD and SDMX reference metadata terms
The SDMX Glossary contains concepts and related definitions that are normally used for building and understanding metadata systems and SDMX data exchange arrangements of international organisations and national data producing agencies. It is an SDMX guideline which provides definition of terms to be used for the comparison and mapping of terminology found in data structure definitions and in other aspects of statistical metadata management. It is recommended as a single entry point to a common SDMX terminology to be used in order to facilitate communication and understanding. In short, the overall message of the glossary is the following: if a term is used, then its precise meaning should correspond to the SDMX Glossary definition; and any reference to a particular phenomenon described in the SDMX Glossary should use the appropriate term. The SDMX Glossary, which replaces the Metadata Common Vocabulary (MCV) published in 2009, was finalised during the second quarter of 2015.
